Emelia Benjamin, MD, ScM, FACC, FAHA
Excellence in Medical Research
Dr. Emelia Benjamin is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Boston University and is a cardiologist at Boston Medical Center. Her countless peer-reviewed articles on cardiovascular disease have contributed greatly to women’s heart health, particularly to our knowledge of atrial fibrillation. Her work to diversify research, including her efforts to recruit a more diverse cohort of the Framingham study, and to mentor early career scientists provides a valuable benefit to the field.
Gary Gibbons, MD
Excellence in Public Service
Dr. Gary Gibbons is the Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As the director for over a decade, he has been a champion for women’s heart health and addressing heart health disparities in communities most impacted by heart disease. Under his leadership, NHLBI has funded important research on preventing or managing risk factors and heart disease across a woman’s entire lifespan and on maternal health, pregnancy outcomes and heart disease, among many other important initiatives.
Malissa Wood, MD, FACC
Excellence in Medical Leadership
Dr. Malissa Wood is the co-director of the Corrigan Women’s Heart Health Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital Heart Center and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her leadership to promote understanding of sex and gender differences in cardiovascular health and disease – whether focused on the impact of exercise, socioeconomic status and more – has improved outcomes for countless patients and supported the work and careers of many others.

Anahad O’Connor is a Health Reporter for the Washington Post, previously the New York Times. As a journalist, his commitment to reporting on the latest health research, nutrition, sleep, obesity, and more is informative and empowers people to take control of their heart health. Specifically, his piece in the New York Times, “Why Heart Disease in Women Is So Often Missed or Dismissed, “shone a spotlight on a very critical issue and will have a positive impact on women’s diagnostic journeys for years to come.
Stacey Rosen, MD, FACC, FACP, FAHA
Excellence in Medical Advocacy
Dr. Stacey Rosen is the senior vice president for the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and a professor of women’s health and cardiology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Her leadership at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health has turned it into a model for how to improve the health of women across their lifespans. Her work empowers and educates women, whether through publications like the Heart Smart books or documentaries like Ms. Diagnosed. Her advocacy for women’s heart health and eliminating gender disparities in care is inspiring and has improved the lives of countless women.
2023 Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes Award for Champion Excellence
Roxanne Watson
A heart transplant recipient, Roxanne Watson is an advocate for organ donation and a WomenHeart Champion (c/o 2015). She has reached millions of people through hundreds of hours dedicated to outreach and education. Roxanne’s commitment to sharing her heart story and using every platform available – including her own weekly radio show – to reach women has been far-reaching and demonstrates incredible dedication to WomenHeart and its mission. Roxanne set a Guinness World Record for signing up 14,000 new organ donors. Roxanne embodies Champion excellence, and we are incredibly grateful for all the work she does to spread messages of hope, gratitude and heart health.
