Heart Disease and Birth Control: What You Need to Know

In this discussion, cardiologist Dr. Natalie Bello, OB/GYN Dr. Kecia Gaither, and WomenHeart Champion Kimberly Connell share what women with heart disease need to know when it comes to choosing birth control. Deciding the type of birth control to use involves careful consideration of a variety of factors, including the contraceptive’s safety, effectiveness, and, importantly, your preference. In some cases, women with heart disease or associated risk factors are advised against certain types of birth control, such as those containing estrogen. Others may be advised against becoming pregnant because the health risks are too high. This webinar breaks it all down for you.

Overlooked and Undertreated: Non-Obstructive Heart Disease in Women

This webinar was hosted in partnership with the International Heart Spasms Alliance. Cardiologists Dr. Roxana Mehran and Dr. Birgit Vogel dove deep into why women are so often misdiagnosed or overlooked when they have a heart condition that doesn’t show coronary blockage, such as coronary vasospasm or microvascular dysfunction/ angina. They described how these conditions are diagnosed and they they are not rare. Patient advocate Annette Pompa and WomenHeart Champion Sheryl Zaworski shared their personal heart journeys.

Preventing Illness: Understanding and Accessing Vaccines for Women with Heart Disease

This webinar highlighted why women with heart disease are at higher risk for certain diseases and what vaccines they should be taking to stay healthy – beyond the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters. Cardiologist Dr. Martha Gulati and Abby Bownas, Co-Manager of the Adult Vaccine Access Coalition, discussed the importance of equity and ensuring immunizations reach all communities, as well as the role of policy in ensuring vaccines are accessible and affordable. WomenHeart Champion Bev Thompson spoke about her efforts to ensure all women in her community are protected from vaccine-preventable illnesses.

Cardiac Yoga
Date: Every Wednesday from February 23, 2022-March 30, 2022

The yoga therapist team that delivered these classes are all studying or are on faculty at the NYC- based Prema Yoga Institute. This yoga cardiac program was developed with cardiologists from the Northwell Health Network and is practiced primarily in a chair; no previous yoga experience is needed. Learning to Thrive with Heart Disease: Stories of Resilience

This webinar featured women with heart disease who are thriving in many aspects of their lives. WomenHeart Champions Gwen Mayes  and Janet Dennis shared tips for positive thinking and what it’s been like to thrive physically, going so far as to become a competitive athlete after a heart transplant. Dr. Christine Crawford, Associate Medical Director at the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) discussed how it’s common for heart disease patients to experience depression and anxiety and how to address those.

Dr. Sonia Henry shared statistics about the prevalence of diabetes and heart disease, described disparities among different groups of women, and shared what women can do to manage the conditions and learn to thrive. She was joined by  WomenHeart Champion Melissa Castro who talked about managing the mental and emotional challenges that come with living with diabetes and heart disease, described what the prevalence of the conditions means for their communities, and shared advice on how to live a full, healthy life.

This gentle yoga and meditation class with Sonja Rzepski promotes healthy hearts and teaches practical ways to reduce stress through yoga, breathing and meditation. This class was developed with cardiologists and is practiced primarily in a chair, no previous experience needed. This class will take place over Zoom; participants are free to join with your camera on or off.
