Meet WomenHeart Champion Myra

Class of 2014 WomenHeart Champion and Community Educator Myra, of Cecile, Louisiana, does so much commendable work on behalf of women living with heart disease.

Myra RobinMyra survived a heart attack. She still works 20 hours a week at her job, and also volunteers.  She has made a great start in her work for WomenHeart.

Community Education Activities in Her Community

She began providing community education in familiar settings.  She delivered a community education presentation to the Ladies’ Altar Society of her church, St. Joseph’s, and she’s planning to deliver her first WomenHeart @ Work presentation to 60 employees at one of her former workplaces.

She also went to her local Burlington store, in Lafayette, to meet with the employees and distribute Red Bags of Courage to support Burlington's Red Dress Event. One of the employees was a woman who had been diagnosed with heart disease. Myra says she was gratified to be able to give her support during and after the presentation.

Ready to Bring HeartScarves to Women Heart Patients

Myra will begin delivering HeartScarves and Red Bags of Courage to two area hospitals in March. She first had to undergo additional training and health screening as a hospital volunteer, and she is looking forward to delivering this personal support to women heart patients at least twice a month.

She was featured in two local newspapers this year, the Beaux Bridge Banner and the Teche News. The articles mentioned how she needed scarves for the HeartScarves program, and she says she soon received about 80 scarves to distribute to patients. “I’ve got scarves coming out of  the woodwork!,” Myra laughs.

Training and Support Makes a Difference

She credits her Symposium training with “giving me the confidence that comes with knowing what I’m talking about.”  She also says the support and encouragement of her Louisiana-native cardiologist has been invaluable to her.  “You know, in Louisiana, we like to eat all the wrong things,” something her cardiologist understood about the regional culture.  “He is completely supportive of what I’m doing in the hospitals,” says Myra.

"The Goodness Just Comes Out"

When asked if there was anything that surprised her about her work as a WomenHeart Champion, Myra considered for a moment, and said, “Yes. I’m surprised about the way people want to help. They just need to be asked to donate or give their time. If people are aware, the goodness just comes out.”

We see a lot of goodness in you, Myra!  Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
