Important questions to ask your physician about your prescriptions
Share |

Here are 10 important questions to ask your doctor before filling a prescription. The answers will help you save money and adhere to your medications!

 1. Why are you prescribing this specific medicine?

Your doctor should fully describe the benefits you'll get -- and how soon.

2. Is there a lower-cost generic?

Generic versions of drugs can save you between 20% and 70%

3. Is there an over-the-counter alternative?

4. Do you have free samples?

Drug makers routinely leave samples for doctors, so it's worth asking!

5. How can I get a co-pay card for this medicine?

Many pharmaceutical companies offer discounts on certain medications through co-pay cards, which can allow you to receive the prescribed treatment at a more affordable cost.

6. Is it OK to split the pill, or take it every other day, to cut costs?

Never do this without checking with your physician.

7. Could you write me a prescription for 14 days or less?

If your doctor is suggesting a brand-name drug, ask for a 14 day supply to start so that you can see if it helps before purchasing an entire month's worth of the drug.

8. Is my drug on your deep-discount generics list in any dosage?

9. Can I save by buying medications from you directly instead of going through my pharmacy?

10. Can you steer me to assistance programs from the manufacturer of my drug, nonprofit groups, or the government?
