THE STORY THAT NEEDS TO BE TOLD
Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading cause of death, yet too many women’s experiences remain overlooked. Since symptoms can present differently in women, heart disease is often misdiagnosed or dismissed, leaving countless women without answers or support.
For more than 25 years, WomenHeart has been the only U.S. patient-centered organization solely dedicated to women living with or at risk of heart disease. We exist to change the narrative, to amplify women’s voices, and to ensure no woman faces heart disease alone.
Now, our mission is part of a global conversation. Beats of Change: a new branded content series presented by the World Heart Federation and produced by BBC StoryWorks, shines a spotlight on the untold stories of cardiovascular disease. The series highlights prevention, treatment, and the lived experiences of patients, families, and communities, while exploring how healthcare leaders and innovations are changing outcomes around the world.
In Beats of Change, the voices of our WomenHeart Champions rise to the global stage, sharing powerful stories that challenge stereotypes and reshape the future of women’s heart health.
Together, we are building a world where women’s heart health is seen, heard, and prioritized.
MEET DENISE DUNAGER
Denise trusted her instincts when she felt something was wrong. After years of being told her heart was fine despite having symptoms of heart disease, high cholesterol, and a family history of heart attack, Denise pushed for an angiogram, and her doctor discovered a 98% blockage, which could have been fatal. Today, she shares her journey to inspire other women to advocate for themselves and never give up in the face of uncertainty.
