A Proven Model

Here are some real-life examples of how the Science & Leadership Symposium has affected both program participants and the lives of women in their communities:

“I had kept my heart disease to myself, family and friends. I now feel that I know enough about heart disease to educate other people - especially women. I feel like I am on a mission and will speak up more frequently and find ways and places where I can share what I have learned in order to prevent other women from going through what I have experienced."

“I remember one woman I met in 2005 when volunteering at a local heart fair.  Her husband approached the booth and was shocked that we provided help for women with heart disease.  They hadn’t known where to turn after her recent heart attack. He walked away to get her and they both returned crying saying how much they needed us. She has been with my local support network ever since.”

“At the Symposium I realized that spreading awareness to even one person makes a difference.  With the public speaking and media training we received, combined with the credibility of Mayo Clinic, I feel like I can approach organizations I would not have thought of previously.”

“I had an information table and spoke to 30 women at their employer’s ‘lunch and learn.' The head of HR called me to say one woman had realized she needed to have her heart checked out, and I assisted in connecting her with a cardiologist in their health network. The HR Director said it was the most powerful and influential and authentic talk they’ve had.”
