About HeartScarvesCreated in 2005 by women heart disease survivors, the HeartScarves program delivers handmade, red scarves to members of our WomenHeart Support Networks, and to women undergoing cardiac procedures. Symbolizing the lifelines of caring and support that exists among us, each red scarf is meant to offer comfort, support, and encouragement for a woman with heart disease and become a part of her healing journey. Recipients of the scarves feel the love and attention that go into the production of hand-made items.
HeartScarves, started by WomenHeart Champions Marilyn Deak and Suzi Arnegger of California, Betsy Doherty of Maine, and the late Tina Bradford of Mississippi, has already distributed thousands of scarves to women in hospitals and rehabilitation centers after a cardiovascular procedure or event. Read our conversation with Marilyn Deak to learn more about the origin of HeartScarves.
This unique – and very heart-felt initiative – is now a packaged kit that contains everything you need to make beautiful scarves for women suffering with heart disease. And, through a partnership with Coats & Clark, Heart Healthy Living magazine, and Better Homes & Garden magazine, HeartScarves receives a major boost in national visibility to jump start this important WomenHeart effort.
PurposeThe purpose of the HeartScarves program is two-fold: primarily, to bring comfort, support, and encouragement to women with heart disease; secondly, to provide a platform for awareness and education about heart disease in women, as well as the WomenHeart organization.
How HeartScarvesWorksThe HeartScarves kit contains everything needed to knit or crochet a beautiful handmade scarf - a symbol of care and support for a woman with heart disease: an enclosed pattern for the scarf to knit or crochet; a personalized note card to accompany your scarf when it is delivered to a heart sister; heart health information from WomenHeart; and, the mailing instructions to send the scarf to the WomenHeart distribution center. The beautiful red scarves are never for sale, nor do we pay people to make them. Each has a woven WomenHeart label sewn into the scarf; a personalized gift card from the knitter; and, history of the HeartScarves program and WomenHeart.
