Florence experienced a heart attack in 2012, and was introduced to WomenHeart by a friend who came to visit her in the hospital.
Incredibly, Florence managed to recover in time to attend the Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic that same year! Florence says the best part of her Symposium experience was meeting other "Heart Sisters," also with scars on their chests, and sharing stories and support for each other.
Florence coordinates WomenHeart of Southern Maryland support network meetings. She also has represented WomenHeart at several community education events, including the "Heartastic Expo" in Landover, MD, the Prince George's County, MD Health Fair, the FedStrive Health Awareness Day, and the Burlington Heart of Style Tour.
Recently, Florence was in the audience of the Dr. Oz television program and had the opportunity to pose some questions about women and heart disease. See Florence in the video.
Florence is writing a book on her experience with heart disease, "Matters of the Heart." In her book, she explains the difference in heart attack symptoms in men and in women, as well as the disparity issues a woman can face, and provides heart-healthy tips and recipes.
One point in her book that she wants women to realize is that "we don't have to be Superwomen" and that we should strive for more balance in our lives.
Great advice, Florence! And thank you for your hard work and dedication!
