How are heart health and oral health related?

Taking care of your teeth results in more than just a pretty smile, it may help with your overall health! Gingivitis, an early phase of gum disease, is inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of plaque and bacteria above the gumline. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to serious gum disease, a more serious stage of infection. Recent studies have demonstrated there is an association between serious gum disease and certain systemic diseases, such as stroke or heart disease, the number one killer of men and women.

Emerging research is showing that there is a link between cardiovascular disease and serious gum disease. There are several theories as to how serious gum disease may have an impact on heart health:

  • The bacteria that cause serious gum disease may enter the bloodstream through the mouth and attach to fatty deposits in the blood vessels, which may contribute to heart disease.
  • The inflammation associated with serious gum disease may play an actual role in heart disease. A recent study examined the bacteria known to cause serious gum disease and the thickening of the blood vessel wall commonly seen in heart disease. After examining over 650 subjects, the investigators concluded that there was an association between an increased level of blood vessel thickening and the presence of the bacteria found in dental plaque known to cause serious gum disease.

Forms of gum disease, such as gingivitis and serious gum disease can be indicators for cardiovascular problems, so individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease should engage in an oral health care routine that promotes good oral health.
