Tips and questions to get the conversation started with your doctor

Oral care tips for heart disease patients

  1. Be prompt with your check-ups: schedule oral exams and professional cleanings once every 6 months with your dentist.
  2. Keep the lines of communication open: tell your dentist if you have a heart condition and any medications you are taking for it. Your dentist will record important health information in your files and coordinate treatment with your physician. Do the same with your physician.
  3. Take care of your oral health:
  • Brush your teeth twice a day with an American Dental Association-accepted antibacterial, fluoride toothpaste, like Colgate Total®. Colgate Total® toothpaste is different from regular fluoride toothpaste – it is the only toothpaste both approved by the FDA and accepted by the ADA to help prevent and reduce gingivitis.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
