WomenHeart brings regional patient education symposium on number one killer of women to Chicago
Washington, DC – Women in the Chicago area who are living with or at risk for heart disease – the nation's leading cause of death in women – are about to get a big boost to their heart health! A Woman's Guide to Heart Health regional patient education program will be held Saturday, September 11, 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Rush University Medical Center, Room 500. The program is brought to Chicago by WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and is a collaboration among the leading women's cardiovascular health experts in the Chicago area. Women age 35+ in Illinois die at a rate of 364/100,000 (CDC, 2010) per year, more than the national average (351).
"WomenHeart is proud to launch our regional patient education symposium series in Chicago where the medical community has a strong commitment to the cardiovascular health of women," said Lisa M. Tate, Chief Executive Officer, WomenHeart. "We want to encourage women in Chicago to take charge of their heart health and to actively help other women do the same."
"It's all about saving lives. For many women, heart disease is preventable; but for the 8 million women in this country living with heart disease, it is a daily challenge to stay heart healthy and motivated. We want to help them." said Annabelle Volgman, MD, Director, Heart Center for Women at Rush University Medical Center, and faculty chair of the program.
The program is free to women living with or at risk for heart disease, and addresses the topics of nutrition, exercise, mental health, medications management, types of heart disease, and how to make the most of doctor visits. Attendees will also learn about opportunities to become a WomenHeart Champion, a trained community educator on women's heart health. Women will attend lectures and workshops to learn the basic science of women's heart disease – prevention, diagnosis and quality care – and discover new techniques to heal the mind and body. They will also have the opportunity to meet and bond with other women living with heart disease and learn from leading health care professionals, health educators, and women's health advocates.
Faculty is from the leading heart health programs in Chicago, including Rush University Medical Center Heart Center for Women, University of Illinois at Chicago – Heart Disease in Women Program, Northwestern University Memorial Hospital Center for Women's Cardiovascular Health, University of Chicago Medical Center, Cardiac Wellness Consultants, Loyola University Medical Center, Sports Cardiology Consultants, NorthShore University HealthSystem, Heart Rhythm Specialists, Resurrection Heart Institute, Aurora Copley, and Midwest Heart Specialists, and the Host Committee for WomenHeart's Celebrating the Heart of a Woman Fundraiser.
