WomenHeart Signs Joint Letter to Congress
Share |

The latest attempt to undo the Affordable Care Act came last week, when the President assigned an Executive Order to discontinue the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments.

These payments to health insurance companies allow 6 million people with low or modest incomes to get financial help for co-payments, deductibles, or other health care expenses. By reducing out-of-pocket costs for millions of consumers with low or moderate incomes, the CSR helps people pay out-of-pocket costs for drugs and services and buy plans with low deductibles.

WomenHeart has released a statement in conjunction with 11 other patient groups expressing grave concern about the effect that ending these payments will have on low-income individuals, families, and the stability of the health insurance market itself. The letter strongly urges Congress to appropriate funds for these payments to reverse the impact of the President's action. To read the letter in full, click here.

This Executive Order is under review by many of the state Attorneys General and may be challenged in the court.

On a brighter note, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee is continuing its bipartisan negotiations to improve health care, while also maintaining important patient protections. We are encouraged by this effort and will stay focused on this opportunity.
