Mayo Science and Leadership Symposium - 2008

WHAT? A four-day science and leadership training course for women heart patients who want to:

  • Learn the basic science of women's heart disease-prevention, diagnosis and optimal treatment and care
  • Discover new ways to thrive by healing body and mind
  • Advocate for the best care for yourself
  • Educate other women and community groups about heart disease risks in women
  • Give effective interviews to the media
  • Improve how women with heart disease are treated within the healthcare system
  • Serve as an official WomenHeart spokeswoman

This comprehensive course will contain lectures, interactive presentations and breakout sessions, along with opportunities to meet with faculty and fellow patients. Presenters include Mayo Clinic cardiology staff and invited health educators, women's health advocates, and professional media trainers.

WHERE? Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN

WHEN? Saturday, October 11, at 6:00 PM to Wednesday, October 15, at 12:00 PM

HEALTH CAUTION: The Symposium is physically and emotionally intense, and not suitable for women who have been hospitalized or experienced severe cardiac symptoms during the previous six months. If this sounds like you, please delay your application until 2009.

WHO MAY APPLY? Women with diagnosed heart disease who meet the following criteria:

  • You agree to read course materials prior to the Symposium.
  • You agree to attend all four days of the Symposium.
  • You agree to conduct 24 hours of community education during the six months following the Symposium.
  • You agree to be an active member of WomenHeart, past your initial six months of service.
  • You have an e-mail address and check it at least once a week.

COST? WomenHeart will pay your tuition, hotel room, and meals.

You will pay your travel expenses, including airfare and ground transportation. A very limited number of travel scholarships are available for women with low incomes who cannot afford travel expenses. If you require a travel scholarship, please check the box at the bottom of the Application Form and send a letter of request.

WHO IS SELECTED? Participants are selected based on the strength of their applications' essay answers and letters of recommendation. Additional consideration is given to geographic and ethnic diversity. Preference will also be given to women patients without medical or nursing education. The Science and Leadership Symposium is co-sponsored by WomenHeart, Mayo Clinic Women's Heart Clinic, and Mayo Clinic Office of Women's Health.

HOW TO APPLY

1. Complete the online form and essay questions below. All applications must be submitted and received by June 20, 2008.

2. Ask your cardiologist or cardiac nurse to send a Letter of Recommendation directly to WomenHeart explaining why you are a good candidate to attend the Symposium.
